Move over, Zara ‘death pants’—we’re wearing cargo pants now

A case for roomy utilitarian bottoms that do it all but do no harm

Let’s be honest: Every summer there comes a point when we’re truly tired of wearing jeans. They stop feeling like an everyday wardrobe staple and more like baggage hanging from your waist, the heavy denim fabric sticking to every inch of your legs in the unbearable heat and humidity. Shoppers around the world thought they found a chic alternative in a pair of polyester ‘Flowing Wide-Leg Trousers’ from Zara that have an elasticated waistband and pockets, but alas, women on TikTok have been sharing accounts of how they’ve been tripping and faceplanting on the pavement thanks to the excess fabric getting caught under shoes and, in one unfortunate incident, even an escalator (yikes!).

So, what’s a girl who’s done with denim and craving something more comfortable to do? Thankfully, there’s another alternative that’s forgiving yet spiffy that even celebrities have agreed on: cargo pants.

The oversized silhouette and multiple pockets might not seem like the most sophisticated pair of bottoms to wear to your summer plans, but we beg to differ. Worn with a strappy top and open-toe sandals or a blazer and ballet flats, the utilitarian pants can transform into a reliable wardrobe staple for any occasion. And there’s no such thing as too many pockets.

Alia Bhatt has been spotted in a particularly luxe version with drawstrings while promoting her new film, Alpha. If you have reservations about looking overly sporty or cosplaying Kim Possible, take cues from Opera at Stella McCartney’s fall 2026 show, where she made a compelling case for the silhouette by pairing classic tan cargo pants with a crisp button-down and a coral blazer and pumps. Another elevated example? Sabrina Elba’s recent Wimbledon look, where she paired hers with crimson kitten heels and a bright-green shoulder bag (so chic). Hailey Bieber, the arbiter of all things cool, frequently pairs oversized, floor-grazing cargo pants with baby tees and vintage leather jackets.

Equal parts practical and polished, these pants occupy the sweet spot between relaxed linen trousers and structured denim.

Without further ado, below, cargo pants to add to cart this season:
