When you put William Dalrymple in a room with journalist and writer Raghu Karnad, and a bunch of Delhi creatives in attendance, the conversation is bound to be riveting. Last evening, The Nod Book Club made its debut in the capital city with an intimate gathering of book lovers, all there to discuss writing, history, and the role of an historian today.

An eclectic crowd of attendees including author Manu Joseph, chef Radhika Khandelwal and designers such as Shweta Kapur, Ruchika Sachdeva, Ashdeen Lilaowala and Peter d’Ascoli, showed up at The Grammar Room, a beautiful space housed inside the iconic Olive Bar and Kitchen in Mehrauli. Over the course of an hour, the crowd sipped on craft cocktails by Scottish gin brand Hendrick’s, while listening to the story of a 20-something Scottish boy who became obsessed with India. Karnad looked back at Dalrymple’s illustrious career, revisiting his years as a travel writer, historian, author, organiser of India’s largest literary festival and now, a podcaster.

“It's astonishingly big [the podcast]. Every episode now gets downloaded 2,50,000 times a day, on the first day”, said the celebrated historian about his award-winning podcast Empire (co-hosted by BBC journalist Anita Anand), which recently hit the 90 million downloads mark. “We'll be at 100 million [downloads] probably by the autumn,” he added.

Each guest walked away with their ‘book fortune,’ aka a reading recommendation wrapped in a fortune cookie by Harajuku Bakehouse. Ours directed us to order International Booker Prize nominee The Director by Daniel Kehlmann. The attendees also went back with The Nod Book Club’s black and white tote filled this time with reading essentials—Nandan Coffee’s single serve pours to keep caffeinated, Smoor chocolates to accompany said coffee, a planner by 431-88 to scribble reading notes in, and a House of Rose stole to keep it cosy. Also in the bag was a hefty tome by William Dalrymple, his latest paperback The Golden Road (which attendees queued to get signed by the author) as well as keepsakes like a wallet by Miraggio and a trusty velvet cream blush by Simply Nam.

After the conversation, an unexpected rain and thunderstorm allowed the gathering to huddle inside the cosy space, and stay on for more conversations over cocktails. Attendees could choose from six innovative cocktails—all courtesy celebration partner, Hendrick’s Gin. Going by the orders, the herbaceous Athena 2.0, a jasmine tea cocktail with a splash of coconut water, seemed to have been the drink of the night.
