12 homegrown kidswear brands to know now

Clothes that make it through a party, the car ride, and bedtime

Once, the soundtrack of childhood was the soft crackle of mulmul jhablas and starched petticoats sunning themselves on a balcony rail. Now, that memory feels drowned out by a riot of cartoon prints and polyester blends. But for our fussy little ones who can’t stand scratchy labels, tight elastics, and dyes that bleed, kidswear brands have levelled up.

Parents are no longer happy defaulting to whatever’s available. They’re reading labels, avoiding synthetics, and expecting children’s clothes to feel (and look) as good as their own. Which is where this new set of homegrown brands comes in. We’re talking better fabrics, a clearer point of view, and no interest in itchy compromises.

01

Muuyee

Founded by Bengaluru-based designer Shweta Pai, Muuyee looks at childrenswear through a craft-first lens. Its name—the word means ‘ant’ in Konkani—nods to a community-minded way of making where small details matter, and you see it in the clothes: handloom cotton, khadi, and silk dyed with plants like indigo and madder and techniques such as shibori, batik, and bandhej. There are wrap dresses, easy separates with big pockets to stash their trinkets, and lots of playful patchwork. Everything is gender-neutral and mostly free of age labels, so pieces can be shared and worn for longer. Don’t miss the ‘Playmate’ section—ant and bird-based brooches and buttons (so cute!), and tiny kantha clothes for dolls turn the whole range into a little world of its own.

What to buy: Shirts with cute appliquéd animal motifs
Price: ₹2,500 to ₹8,000 (approx)
