Vintage, heirloom dressing is the mood of season and for all the right reasons. It carries legacy, intricate artisanal embroidery and craft, and instantly teleports us to a world packed with heritage, grandeur and a story that is as personal as it is cultural. Mayyur Girotra’s latest collection, The Collectables: Series Two, is synonymous with heirloom dressing.
The collection will be unveiled at the upcoming Mumbai edition of The Wedding Collective, and is an ode to the textile and craft history of the country, and the individualist iconism of Indian women. Vintage textiles have been consciously sourced and turned into pieces with a contemporary approach, without losing the meaning or memory behind them. Every piece is crafted with the approach that they can be passed down generations, without it feeling outdated. Bright hues, rich embroidery techniques in a variety of silhouettes dominate the collection.
At the House of Mayyur Girotra, timeless, craft rich pieces have always been a crowd favourite. Everyone from the likes of Ananya Panday, Jahnvi Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Madhuri Dixit have worn his creations. Most recently, Fashion consultant and stylist, Diya Mehta Jatia wore a custom piece, inspired by sholapith, at the Met Gala.
With wedding season around the corner, the collection is made for every bride, bridesmaid and wedding guest who wants a piece of heritage that can make her feel her most authentic self. So, whether you’re the maximalist bride, a bridesmaid who wants to wear something unique, or just a wedding guest curating your wardrobe, there is something for everyone to sport this shaadi and festive season.
Below, Girotra picks the five key looks that define this collection (we made him choose so you don’t have to!):
The Reclaimed Skirt

“Vintage Kutch Rabari and Banarasi textiles, restored and brought together with Zardozi, Resham and appliqué. This is old-world craft, revived in a chic, timeless silhouette and made with love,” says Girotra. A versatile piece, it can take your outfit to a whole new level, without much effort. We’re predicting this the season's “it” after party look. And when you want to rewear this for your next cocktail party, just pair it with a crisp button down.
The Mosaic Kurta

“A canvas of vintage Rabari embroidery, Mochi work, Banarasi, appliqué, Zardozi and reworked mirrors brought together in one timeless kurta that can be worn in ways unimaginable,” assures Girotra. Whether you’re the bride or the bridesmaid, one can't really go wrong with this super versatile and wearable piece. This one is as much at-home at an intimate mehendi or haldi, as it is for a Diwali party or even a posh brunch. It's eclectic, bold and can be styled with almost anything and everything already present in your trousseau. We’d suggest pairing it with a fun multi-couloured lehenga or a pair of sharara pants if you’d like to keep it comfy.
The Heirloom Bride

“A meeting of Suzani , Banarasi, appliqué and delicate tissue brought together through layers of intricate embroidery. My tribute to the old souls, reimagined for today’s bride,” explains Girotra. This is the go-to lehenga for a modern Indian heirloom bride. The slightly unexpected, geometric patterns in pastel hues bring a sense of modernity while the Persian inspired needle-work gives it the look and feel of a modern heirloom. And we’re imagining the skirt paired with a chic button-down and the choli with barrel denim, for some post-wedding action.
The Pink Love

“A vintage jacket, reimagined through layers of heritage textiles, borders and textures in powder pink, peach and burgundy, finished with a burgundy tissue kurta. A magical before-and-after vintage piece, revived The House of MG way,” explains Girotra. If you’re saving up for your first House of Mayyur Girotra piece it has to be one of his statement vintage jackets. It’s an absolute must-have be it for festive or wedding season. Something that can be paired with literally everything, from lehengas and salwars to even a pair of good old blue denims. With a variety of textiles and textures, it brings together layers of heritage, revived in this designer’s maverick style.
The MG Signature Denim

“Denim, reimagined through Zardozi. This is our signature language, where the ease of contemporary denim meets the richness of Indian craft,” Girotra states. A denim jacket is a must in everyone’s wardrobe. This wedding season, take it up a notch with this re-imagined craft version. We’d suggest throwing this on for your after-party, or to make a true statement at your Sangeet. Post your wedding, this will be your most worn couture piece!
